Chassis numbers, service- and engine numbers
Vehicle data
Like every car, every DAF or Volvo has a number of vehicle data: chassis number, type number, license plate and year of manufacture, which can be read from the registration certificate. The type plate also shows the service number and for the later types Daf 46, Volvo 66 and 340 also the color number. That is why we zoom in on the type plate.
The nameplate of a Daf and Volvo 66
Until (approximately) 1969, a type plate was used with the type number on the left. You will find this type plate in the Daf 600, 750, 30, 31, 32 and in the first types Daf 33, 44 and 55. (see figure 1) Depending on the type, the service number is on the left or right.
From 1969, the type plate has been renewed and standardized. It now looks like this for each type: top left the type number, top right the chassis number and bottom right the service number. (see figure 2). You will find this type plate on the second types Daf 33, 44, 55 and on the Daf 66, 46 and also on the first types Volvo 66 and 343.
Volvo 66
The Volvo 66 (from 1976) and 343 have the service number at the top left behind the type. At the place where the service number used to be, there are now two numbers (see figure 3). The first number is the color code (eg 042-5); the second number is the upholstery code (e.g. 6260). It is therefore possible to check on the Volvo 66/343 type plate which color number your car has.
Volvo 340
The Volvo 340 is supplied with 2 different type plates (see figure 4). Until 1980, the combination of type number, service number and chassis number is on the third line (XLB...). The column on the right contains the color code on the fourth line (see no. 11). From 1980, the type number, service number and chassis number are on the second line. The color code remains on the fourth line, right.
Kalmar Tjorven
At the top of this type plate are the words 'Verkstat Sweden' and Kalmar. Below that on a line on the left is the service code and on the right is the chassis number. Below that the type number, indicated with 'TYP'.
Daf Pony
This type plate is similar to the type plate in figure 1. The type number is on the left, somewhat in the middle. However, the chassis number is at the bottom right and the service code is at the bottom left.
Daf 66YA
On the 66YA, the nameplate is mounted on the dashboard, next to 4 other plates. On the leftmost picture you will find the year of manufacture on the fifth line. On the rightmost picture you will find the original engine number on the top line (on the engine block you can check whether the original engine is still in it). The second line shows the chassis number and the third line the original number plate. A Daf 66YA has NO service number.

The chassis number
The chassis number must always match the chassis number that is stamped into the bulkhead of your car. The chassis number consists of the type number, followed by the actual chassis number.
- The chassis number of the DAFs consists of 6 digits or (in the case of the Daf 46 and 66) of an A followed by 5 digits. The chassis number of a Daf 66YA starts with a Y followed by 6 digits.
- A Kalmar Tjorven has a chassis number consisting of 5 digits.
- The Volvos type 66 and 343 have one number-letter combination that contains both service number and chassis number. The chassis number is the last part of this 6 digit combination.

The service number
The service number indicates in which series the car was produced. There are differences in the design of parts between the series. Via the service number you can check which version is mounted on your car.
- A Daf 600 has no service number. It does have an LP or SP code where LP stands for Luxury Passenger Car and SP for Standard Passenger Car followed by a number. This is equal to the service number.
- Every DAF, except the 66YA, has a 4 or 6 digit service number (depending on the age of the car) consisting of the type number followed by a serial number, for example 5504-02 or 322-3. The second series Daf 46 has a 4-digit code without a type number, e.g. 09-66. The first number is the service number; the second number is the color number. The Daf 66YA has NO service number.
- The Volvo 66 before 1-1-1976 have a 6-digit service number consisting of a type number and a serial number or a coding equal to the second series Daf 46.
- The Volvo 66 and 343 after 1-1-1976 have one number-letter combination that contains both service number and chassis number. The service number on a Volvo 66 consists of 6 digits followed by a letter combination, e.g. 642910AC. The Volvo 340 always has a service number starting with XLB. Both service numbers are structured as follows:

Engine numbers
Where can I find the engine number?
The engine number is on the engine block for all types. The engine number is not stated on the registration certificate or type plate, with the exception of the Daf 66YA. The engine number of a two-cylinder (see figure 6) is on the top of the engine block, on the flat part below the manifold. The number is stamped into the metal.
The engine number of a four-cylinder (1100cc, 1300cc and 1400cc) is on the side of the engine, next to the ignition, on a riveted plate. The number consists of an engine type number (e.g. BB110E) followed by a serial number. The combination of both is the engine number.
With an 1100cc or 1300cc engine, the serial number is 5 or 6 digits. For a 1400cc engine the sequence number is 9 digits: for example B14-1E-000100802.
