Young Daf drivers! You too?

You're young, and you want... an old DAF to drive? How then? No climate control (well, via window winders and folding windows), keyless entry (okay, if you don't close it then), wireless charging, panoramic roof, lane departure warning, ABS, ESP, 3-cylinder turbo, paddle shifters. None of that. But mods such as a thick exhaust, LED lighting or Bluetooth / DAB + radio or a rat look; you can do that on a DAF or Volvo with Variomatic. Put some swag on your Daf!

And you share that with others. Online, with posts of cool rides or phat upgrades, but especially live: tinkering and / or driving together!
For example, young guests come together for tours, Ascension weekend, DCN meets DRT event or to go drifting together in the fresh snow.

On this page you can read and see why it is super cool to own and drive a Daf or Volvo. Read on and find out what's so great about it through these young members of DAF Club Nederland.

Why choose a DAF as a young man / young lady?

- It is something different from the umpteenth Polo, Golf, Focus, A3 or 3 series. This is Dutch pride!
- Let your friends continue switching gears. With a Variomatic you have 1000s of gears and you only have to accelerate and brake! And some driving skills of course.
- The car that your grandpa or grandma may have driven can now also keep up in modern traffic with its Variomatic!
- Nice and affordable to drive.
- You can easily tinker with it, and if you don't have the knowledge for that, you can learn it through the DAF Club!
- A Daf/Volvo with Variomatic can drive backwards just as fast as forwards. With that fact you can impress; your friends can't do that with their car. And: Formula 1 drivers Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda did it in pimped Dafs. Cool!
- If you opt for a Daf 66 YA you drive in old material from (the Ministry of) Dutch Defense. A thick convertible with automatic transmission that was used in the Dutch army in the past!
- You can also customize a Daf to your liking; both in terms of looks (LED lamps, audio installation, widened rims) and under the hood. You can upgrade to a B14 engine in the 4-cylinder Dafs/Volvos. Go fast as stig!

"In December 2020, via the D.C.N. Facebook page, I ended up in a group of friends with young people who drive a Daf or Volvo, better known as DRT. After I became a member of DAF Club Nederland, despite the fact that it was strongly supported by my family, not recommended, bought a 1972 Daf 55 sedan from one of the DRT members. That is not only my first Daf but also my first car!"
"Even before I bought the car I knew one thing for sure: 'there must be other rims on it'. Despite that intention, my first accessory that I bought for the Daf was a set of 'eyelashes' for above the headlights. Not long after that the Daf on GLS rims. After evenings of sanding and a few spray cans further, they were painted tightly. I gave them a sporty red edge myself. Speaking of red... My Daf has a red interior! The color red has therefore become a kind of "red thread". Under the bonnet there is also a metallic red rocker cover hidden. In addition, I have blinded the rear 3 windows and the windscreen has been given a sun strip. In this way I have given it a sporty appearance”.

"You should know that my hobby is to 'drift' with my 66. I then completely adapted it as a drift car. That means that there is a tuned 1,400 cc engine in the front and a welded differential in the back. I also adjusted the chassis including a thick stainless steel exhaust. Furthermore, the wishbones have been extended for more camber so that the car gets more grip on the front wheels. In addition, I have installed thick spotlights. In the interior I have mounted a full roll cage and the standard seats have been replaced by bucket seats ”.

"A professional bungler in Rotterdam who wants to make an attempt to go around the world with my Daf 44. Over the past 3 years I have written and filmed various reports about my Daf for my site Daffert.nl on which you can see or read is how I fix these over and over, often together with my buddy Clint. Normally I sit behind the PC all day as a maritime engineer, which makes me really enjoy tinkering with my hands and figuring things out" .

Frank Wittendorp (2000)

"Not only my first Daf, but also my first car!"
"I wasn't consciously looking for a Daf, but I was looking for a car with character at a reasonable price. Precisely because I had some free time, it wouldn't be a problem if the necessary work still needed to be done."
“I like a Daf 33 as daily transport. I drive it every day to my internship address in Emmen. That is a nice ride of about 15 kilometers. In addition, we also regularly use it for a tour in the Southeast Drenthe region. The best part is the positive reactions along the way. In the short time I've had it, I've seen many smiling faces and thumbs up."

"My own Daf has become very special in the meantime and that is due to all the adventures I have experienced with it in the meantime. Then you have to think of all the times that I have been stranded with bad luck and of distant holidays to Dublin and Paris."

"When I went to look at a Dafje 33 for the first time on a Saturday morning, March 28, 2015, I was sold. I loved the engine, an air-cooled 2 cylinder! And to my surprise it was an automatic transmission. The condition of the car was reasonable and I bought it!”

Derike Velthuis (1997)

“From an early age I have loved old-timers, but I have never done anything with them. When I watched a piece of the reversing races during a Dutch lesson in fourth grade, I knew: when I grow up later I will buy a Daf. I never grew up, but five years later I finally bought my first V66. Not only the technology of a DAF fascinates me, but I also find the time and culture in which the DAF rose and fell again fascinating.”

“After I bought my first V66, I still knew very little about driving and maintenance. By joining the group on Facebook, I got to know some people and I could also ask or look up things about the car if I couldn't figure it out. Six months later I became an ‘official’ member.”

"Exactly cool if it's a little different"
Dion Snoek has been crazy about DAFs from an early age. He himself drives a DAF 55 and has a DAF 66 in the garage.

"The car (a Daffodil, Daf 30) has a high cuddly content, an interesting technique, is affordable for everyone, you are yourself in it and it is an accessible car."
Maran is the one and only 'Dafmeneer'. He can now share his love for the brand with the DAF Rainbow Team (DRT), the youth section of the DAF Club Netherlands. It is one of the few old-timer associations that has a special branch for young people. He likes it so much that he is the point of contact for the department. In addition, the youth club helps to find the right parts."

Chevy Jansen (2003)

Chevy has restored a DAF 33 all by himself. And after using it as daily transport for a while, he now has a 55 coupe as daily transport. Had another Volvo 66 in between, but it now has a new owner within DRT (DAF Rainbow Team). So a young guy with 2 Dafs, who is also a volunteer in the parts warehouse.
"During the restoration of my DAF 33, a few adjustments were made to it, so that it can be used better for daily transport: LED headlights for more light in the dark (inspired by our treasurer Irma Hak), reversing lights and a radio."

Jelle Meeuse (1999)

Jelle Meeuse (1999)

"What are you going to do if you just got married in a dark green 55? Indeed, keep the accelerator down for now to explore the world a little better."
"(...) Monday we were supposed to go to a new place in the world, but the accommodation had to be booked first. After a long search, we finally responded to the crazy proposal of two of our friends to accompany their honeymoon with ours on the beautiful island, yes: Sardinia. Monday evening we went on the water from Livorno towards Olbia. Still enjoying our (tr) old four-wheeler."
"(...) Immediately afterwards a few days of odd jobs (with the help of Wouter and Kelvin from the DRT), and we have now managed to make up the kilometers. A day in Limburg and immediately visiting friends."

Niels Tholenaar (1995)

Niels Tholenaar (1995)

“I have a 1976 Daf 46 in inferno red and a 1990 Volvo 340 1.4 variomatic as a daily car.”
“The Daf is completely original, except for the tachometer and vacuum gauge. And I want to keep it that way. I have already partially equipped the Volvo with extra original options such as the tachometer and the clock at the bottom right. I have also tackled many maintenance issues on both cars.”
Niels is a volunteer in the warehouse. "Being busy with your hobby, together with others. The work is also instructive, especially when customers come by for parts that I didn't even know existed until recently. But by looking for the stuff in parts books you luckily come across a very far."

Jarno Vos (1995)

Jarno Vos (1995)

"In addition to my hobby of maintaining / restoring antique tractors, I also had the plan to purchase an old Daf. My choice fell on a Volvo 66 combi from '78. The GLS rims and sliding roof, among other things, caught my attention and so I I picked it up in the summer of 2018. I immediately fell in love with the well-thought-out construction and the way in which the car can still keep up with current traffic. Plans are to restore the car within a few years. I hope, unlike previous years, to do some events this season."

DRT: DAF Rainbow Team

Within DAF Club Nederland, a group of young people with their passion for Dafs and Volvos with Variomatic are active as 'DRT'.

The DRT, which stands for DAF Rainbow Team, is a Whatsapp group founded by a number of friends with colored Dafs. What started with red, yellow and blue, among other things, has now expanded considerably via white to fire red, from smurf blue to woody green: everything is possible.

Do you want to know more about DRT? Look them up on Facebook!
The DRT Facebook group has more than 350 members and they share, for example, mods on their cars, but also all kinds of key work and drilling.
