"The epitome of character / The driver at the center / Modern, sophisticated technology at its best"

From 1982 the Volvo 300 series is called 340/360 and is a further development of the Volvo 343/345, actually the Daf 77. Where the 343 was initially only supplied with the CVT (Variomatic), this automatic gearbox was given in the 340/360 a smaller role due to the arrival of the manual versions.

Basically a DAF design, the Volvos 340 and 360 have the new aerodynamic front presented in 1981. They differ in the motorisation: from 1982 the 340 has the 1400 cc B14 engine and with the appearance of the Volvo 360 GLT having an injection engine with an extra sporty look, the 360 has a 1900 cc B19 engine in the front.

Over the years, from 1982 to 1991, the 300 series has been supplied with various trim levels, such as the spectacularly low-priced (16,850 Dutch guilders) Winner version, Special, and top model GLE. The 300 series was also a well-known appearance in the Dutch street scene in police outfit.

Developed as DAF from the late 1960s, its career came to an end in 1991. The very last copy was, as an ode to the origins as a DAF, equipped with the CVT or 'Variomatic'.

Years of construction:    1982 - 1991
Produced:    340 and 360 combined: 536.558 (of which about 235.000 equiped with CVT)

After a facelift with a tighter nose and a new fresh dashboard, the name 340 was used for all types with the 1400 cc engine (3, 4 and 5 doors), the 360 is the version with a 2.0 liter engine. Its DAF roots faded but the CVT remains until the end of its car life.

From the 343/345, the 340 takes over the Luxe, DL and also the more luxurious GL trim level, which bystanders can see with an indication in the grille that it is the most luxurious Volvo 340. And the 340 is also offered in Winner version; a spectacularly low-priced version that Volvo uses to get rid of the 'too expensive' image that clings to the 300 series once and for all.

Model year '84 brought us a 300 series sedan with a traditional trunk. From 1985 a diesel engine was presented, only being available in combination with the manual gearbox. The 1.7 engine is also not available with the CVT.

The 360 is the version with the 2.0 liter engine and only available with a manual transmission.
This model also features the facelift with a tighter nose and a new fresh dashboard and becomes more of a Volvo. A seriously fast car for its time! The top speed is 180 km/h.
Although there is no Variomatic (CVT) in it, and therefore not the goal of D.C.N. keeping Volvo's 360 'on the road', we have a warm heart for the model because it is basically a development of DAF.
